10 Top Sailing Destinations!

Since we met, Larry and I have dreamed of living aboard a yacht and sailing to exotic and exciting destinations. Now that we find ourselves so close to Cape Town (Just 1hr to the beach!), the feeling that our dream is possible has increased tenfold. To test our sea legs, we embarked on an introductory sailing course in Simonstown, and let’s just say we are now saving for our competent crew certification!

Exploring the potential of our “lives to be” is constantly pulling at my shirt. So I will live, for the interim, vicariously through internet-powered sailors and the veterans of sea life. Immersing myself in their world whilst willing it into ours … One is never too old to have a happy childhood, after all!

During this journey of discovery, I will try to share pertinent information about my findings. There are many topics to cover, but today we shall discover ten of the top sailing destinations. As there are so many topics to cover, there are SO many great places to sail, but here are the ones that stuck out for me today (in no particular order).

#1 British Virgin Islands

The British Virgin Islands is a British territory in the Caribbean to the east of Puerto Rico. Not sure where we will end up, but it definitely seems like one for the list! Warm temperatures year-round and, as the name suggests, quite a few beautiful islands to visit and explore. Fabulous snorkelling and excellent diving spots are guaranteed!

#2 Whitsunday Islands, Australia

In the heart of the Great Barrier Reef, Australia. Stunning beauty, crystal clear waters, warm tropical climate and white sandy beaches. Nice!

#3 Greek Islands

Greece is renowned for its beautiful islands like Santorini, Mykonos and Rhodes. Sunsets to die for, the Mediterranean climate, historical ruins and charming fishing villages make this another great destination.

#4 French Riviera, France

Ooh la la, the French Riviera (aka the Cote D’Azur). The place sounds fabulous, but I can’t help thinking this one will be pricey, with movie reference destinations such as Saint-Tropez, Cannes and Nice; what do you think?

#5 Croatia

Sailing along the Croatian coasts and visiting the Dalmatian islands. If breathtaking landscapes, historic buildings and hidden coves are your thing, this should definitely be on your list.

#6 Amalfi Coast, Italy

Sailing along the Amalfi Coast in Italy allows one to explore a few charming coastal towns like Positano, Amalfi, and Ravello. Inspiring cliffs, clear waters, and Mediterranean weather and charm. Sound like an outright win to me!

#7 The Galapagos Islands

The fauna and flora on the Galapagos islands, off the coast of Ecuador, were once a source of inspiration for Darwin’s theory of evolution. The islands host a variety of wildlife (some only existing on the island and nowhere else!), snorkelling with sea life and leisurely walks on sublime beaches. Wow!

#8 Canary Islands, Spain

Known as the sunshine centre of Europe. Temperatures are naturally regulated by trade winds*. This, combined with great beaches, a variety of land & sea sports and volcanic scenery, make it another one on the to-do list!

*Trade Winds: Winds that reliably blow east to west just north and south of the equator.

#9 Seychelles

Sometimes referred to as the Galapagos of the Indian Ocean due to its captivating scenery and untouched landscapes. Here you find an idyllic tropical setting surrounded by natural beauty.

#10 Bay of Islands, New Zealand

Bay of Islands is a subtropical micro-region. Mile after mile of beach and rocky coastline with 144 picturesque islands. Beautiful bays and breathtaking landscapes all seeped in Maori history.

The opportunity to travel and explore gnaws gently at my ankles, and I look forward to discovering more about beautiful destinations, sailing and far off adventures!
